Interesting. Disruptive. #2WordsAAAE

Let’s play a game. Pick a word to sum up 2016 for our industry, then pick a different word to describe our industry in 2017. I’ll go first.

2016: Interesting. With the movements in the markets and the shuffle we played when interest rates hit a summertime low, we were kept on our selling toes. From the springtime Department of Labor issuance of its fiduciary duty rule to the subsequent litigation, legislation, and preparation dance we’ve seen from the industry, you can’t help but be engrossed in it all. Add the 2016 election to the mix and we had a year that was anything but boring.
 

2017: Disruptive. The twelve months that lie ahead for our industry will be poles apart from what we’ve known in the recent or distant past. Maybe it’s the trendy word of the moment but I cannot think of a more apropos way to look at what lies ahead. The DOL rule showdown continues. The industry moves toward April’s implementation without fully showing their cards while we wait to hear something new about the various efforts to derail the rule. It would be a mistake on anyone’s part to underestimate the efforts of the litigation, legislation, or executive action or their disruption over the next several months. The DOL rule will be a left turn; it will uproot and change how we think, behave, do business, and go about our day-to-day serving clients and earning a living. But there’s something to be said for it. Someone will take the lead on being a disruptor of our industry. Some, hopefully many, will shake it up and be the innovators that push our industry to achieve greater success.
 

Your clients will continue to be challenged in making sure they have a plan for retirement that will meet their needs and will not run out if they live a long and happy life. This industry and the products it offers are uniquely positioned to help your clients in meeting those needs. Your clients need you now more than ever.
 

Be a maker in 2017. Be a builder in 2017. Be more than you could imagine and greater than any challenge you face.
