Is Retirement Confidence Misplaced?

By Heath Waddington, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing

What a difference seven years makes! Oh... and also one of the longest bull runs in the history of the market. In 2010 Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America commissioned a survey called Reclaiming the Future. The purpose of this survey was to assess attitudes on retirement from the baby boomer generation, and the results were not particularly encouraging. One of the findings that stuck with me was that, when asked “Do you believe there is a retirement crisis in this country”, 92% of respondents answered either somewhat or absolutely.[1] If you look at what was happening at the time, you will remember that the market had started one of the longest bull runs in history, but the wounds of the Great Recession were still very fresh and the losses that many had experienced in the prior two years were still very much on people’s minds. At the beginning of October 2010 when the survey was conducted, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was under 11,000.[2]

The End of an Era

By Heath Waddington, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing

The beginning of 2017 marked the end of an era at Ann Arbor Annuity Exchange (AAAE). Van Lumbard stepped down as president at the end of last year to start a new journey: retirement. He will remain on for the next few months as a consultant to ensure a smooth transition for our producers. Even in retirement, it was important to Van that AAAE be left in the best possible position to succeed. That is just the kind of guy he is.

Van was instrumental in building AAAE up to an elite level to compete with the top marketing organizations in the industry. So many of the marketing organizations that were around when AAAE was founded are now long forgotten.

Van always reminded us that the insurance industry was built on relationships, and as such he worked to mold AAAE into a service model that puts producers first. There are numerous people working for insurance companies around the industry that cut their teeth working under Van. He is a mentor to many and made a lasting impact on the insurance industry. He will be sorely missed by those of us that have worked with him for so many years on a daily basis.

Please help us in congratulating Van on a tremendous career and a well-deserved retirement!

NAFA ALERT — PRESIDENT TRUMP DIRECTS DOL TO CONSIDER RESCISSION OR REVISION OF FIDUCIARY RULE

WASHINGTON, D.C.  (February 6, 2017) —

NAFA applauds President Donald Trump for beginning the process of stopping the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule.

As most of you are aware, on Friday February 3, 2017 the White House took executive action which received widespread coverage.  President Trump signed a memorandum directing the Department to review the rule to determine whether it may adversely affect the ability of Americans to access retirement products and information, cause dislocations in the financial services marketplace, and cause increased litigation that will drive up prices of retirement products and services.  It also gave the Department clearance to move forward to rescind or revise the rule as appropriate and as consistent with law.

Guidelines for When to Review Your Client’s Life Insurance

By Matt Kaas, Life Marketing Consultant

Most clients tend to think of their life insurance policies as a “set it and forget it” part of their financial plan. Thinking that you never have to review your existing coverage or re-evaluate your needs is one of the largest misconceptions about life insurance. Ideally you would review your client’s life insurance policies with them annually, but when that is not an option, here are some general life changes that you can use as guidelines for when to review your client’s life insurance coverage.
