Conference veterans know that the name of the game at a conference is to network. With all of that networking and exciting idea sharing, time can pass very quickly and you may forget many of the most interesting things you learned if you do not take action quickly. The following tips can help you to get the most out of your conference experience.
Sometimes the best place to begin downloading and using all of the information you obtained from the conference is on the plane ride home. This is a great opportunity for you to have uninterrupted time to write down all of the ideas and plans to connect with people while the experience and energy of the conference is still fresh in your mind. Take a few minutes to write down the most important things you would like to take away from the conference while you have this time.
Get organized. Take all of the business cards you have collected and add them to your email and phone contacts. A helpful tip is to quickly write something memorable about the person you just met on the back of their business card to help you remember them. Organize your contacts by company name and last name. Connect with them on LinkedIn and start networking. It is best to reach out to these new contacts as soon as possible while the new relationship is fresh in both of your minds. Be sure to personalize your communication with something that your new contact will remember to form a meaningful bond. Also, there are many smartphone apps that can be used to take a photo of a business card and add the information to your contacts.
It is likely that your conference included presenters, roundtable discussions, and other helpful learning events. Hopefully you were able to take notes that you can now transfer to a more usable format. Usually a presenter will also have handouts and other material available for you to review at a later date. Now is the time to review this information and decide how you can apply the concepts to your business. It may also be an opportunity for you to more thoroughly research the companies and/or products you were introduced to.
Conferences are a great resource to help you continue to develop your industry knowledge and stay current in the field. If you would like to discuss how to get the most out of industry conferences, please give AAAE a call at 800.321.3924.
